Romantic Decorating Using Candlelight

by Veronica Smith

Candlelight is the ultimate romantic lighting. Movie scenes with flickering candlelit romantic dinners will have viewers associating candlelight with romance forever.

When decorating a room in the home, candlelight can pull in the same romantic feel with a relatively inexpensive price tag.

Different types of candles create different moods and looks, so choose the style that creates the romantic tone you are seeking when decorating.

Tea Light Candles

Tea Light candles are small candles that normally come in small plastic or metal containers. They are typically used in small candle holders and provide a soft, romantic glow.

Tea lights tend to burn for about four to six hours, depending on the manufacturer. They come in a variety of scents and colors, but since they are often hidden from sight, there is no need to spend money on the additional cost of color since it will be rarely seen.

Some tea lights come as floating candles that can be placed in a clear glass bowl along with rose petals for an extremely romantic look.

Votive Candles

Votive candles are the next biggest size of candle after tea lights. They are usually about 2 1/2" high and 1 1/2" wide and were originally made for religious use. The typical white, unscented votive has now been replaced with votive candles that come in a variety of sizes, scents and shapes. Choose romantic red glass votive candle holders to create a gentle glow in the room.

Pillar Candles

Pillar candles are candles that are shaped like pillars. They come in a variety of sizes ranging from tall and narrow with one wick to short and wide with three wicks.

Pillar candles are great to use in a romantic decor, because they come in a wide assortment of colors and color combinations.

It is not unusual to find pillar candles that are striped or layered both in color and fragrance.

When using pillar candles to create a romantic setting, place a trio of them of varying heights on a white square dish with rose petals scattered at the base. The simplicity of the grouping combined with the gentle light of the candles instantly creates a romantic feel.

Taper Candles

Long and narrow, taper candles are the traditional romantic candles. They range in length from 6" to 9" or more and are placed in candle holders designed specifically for tapers. Taper candles create an instantly romantic mood at the dining room table or grouped together on the fireplace mantle. Choose simple white candles for a gentle look or vibrant red tapers to create a more lively mood. Usually unscented, tapers will vary the most in their textures and colors.

Specialty Candles

Specialty candles are not for everyone. Some come in traditional shapes, while others can be found shaped like everything from a pickle to an ice cream sundae.

For a romantic mood, heart shaped candles would be ideal. Many companies offer heart shaped, floating candles that can be grouped together and placed in bowls of water throughout the room.

Safety

No matter what type of candlelight is used, be sure to follow safety precautions

Keep open flames away from fabrics and places where they could be bumped or knocked over.

Do not place candles on the top of televisions or other electrical items.

The romantic mood created by the soft glow of candlelight can quickly alter a room's mood and feel. Experiment with different candle types to create the perfect romantic setting.
