How to Choose a Mattress
Your mattress is one
of the most important furniture purchases you will make for your home.
Most people spend at least a third of every day in bed, and over the
life of a good mattress, you could be spending more than 1,200 full days
lying on it. Obviously,
it’s important that it be very comfortable!
The wrong bedding can cause muscle and joint aches, restless
nights, and exhaustion throughout the day.
Here are some tips for how to choose a mattress that will help
you to wake refreshed and to feel wonderful throughout the day.
- If you are testing
a mattress in a bed store, sit on it for a moment to test its
quality. It should not feel lumpy or limp. When you stand up again, the mattress should spring
immediately back into place, rather than slowly resuming its shape.
- Once you have
found a mattress that feels comfortable when sitting on, test it
lying down with your shoes off.
If you are sharing your bed with another person, you should
test it together.
- Take your time
while lying on a mattress to test it.
Problems are not always immediately apparent.
Wait at least ten to fifteen minutes to decide whether the
bed is comfortable.
- Don’t just lie
on your back. Test your
favorite sleeping positions, including resting on your side and
stomach. If you feel
any pressure points, the mattress will probably not be comfortable
during the night.
- A good mattress
should not sag or slope.
- Understand how
mattresses work. The
number and placement of the coils inside the mattress determine the
level of support. The
right coil placement for you will support your back and neck while
allowing for the natural curves of your body.
The coils should also not creak or poke through the mattress.
- Most mattresses
have a thick layer of padding over the coils.
This determines how comfortable and soft a mattress is.
The right mattress is very much
a matter of personal taste. Be
sure to take your time to find the
bedding that best suits your needs,
because it will have a major effect on your everyday life.
